Supporting UConn Hartford

We committed $500,000 to UConn in support of its new residence hall in downtown Hartford. Our funding will help cover the cost of room and board for economically disadvantaged students.

Our relationship with UConn spans decades, and we are proud to be a part of the university’s efforts in expanding its presence in downtown Hartford. UConn’s dedication to excellence in education is why it was one of our inaugural partners when we started our school-to-career pipeline program, Travelers EDGE, 17 years ago. Together, we are helping to build a brighter future for our city and state.

Supporting the Connecticut Invention Convention

We continued to sponsor innovation awards at the Connecticut Invention Convention (CIC) State Finals.

We presented two Travelers CIC Awards in 2024:

Leah

4th grader
Leah won the Travelers Safe Auto Award for her “Improved Visor Sun Shield” that protects drivers’ eyes from sun glare. Leah’s invention improves visibility while driving, a major innovation in auto safety.

Elango and Elakiya

4th graders
Elango and Elakiya won the Travelers Safe Home Award for their “Safety CO” invention, a sensor that automatically opens windows for proper, life-saving ventilation. Their sensor addresses how existing carbon monoxide alarms detect danger but don’t avert it.

Girls Who Code

Our Technology & Operations team hosted 60 high school students as part of a Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program. This two-week program provides aspiring computer scientists with a chance to connect with and learn from industry professionals.

Volunteers from across Technology & Operations spent the weeks leading up to the program designing activities to deliver an engaging experience for the students, which included resume and interview workshops, networking with women in a tech panel, and building a robot.

The students closed out their two weeks by presenting virtual games they designed using coding techniques they learned during the program, followed by a closing ceremony.

Youth Development Center Literacy Carnival

Employees from our Houston, Texas, office volunteered at the Youth Development Center’s Literacy Carnival, helping distribute more than 700 books to local children.

This opportunity affirmed the importance of what we do in the community. Literacy builds bridges, and I can’t thank the YDC enough for letting us walk this path together.

Planting Trees with American Forests and Trees Atlanta

Employees from our Atlanta office spent Earth Day with American Forests and Trees Atlanta, planting 100 trees at Standing Peachtree Greenspace.

The local green space will also see an ADA-compliant kayak and canoe launch built as part of a new Riverlands Camp and Paddle Trail. The water trail will be the first of its kind in the area and will provide direct access to the river for nearby residents.

As these new trees take root, they represent more than just a successful initiative; they’re a display of our dedication to taking care of our customers, communities and each other. That’s what the Travelers Promise is all about.

2024 Featured Service Project: Play Together, Stay Together

Children in foster care often experience a range of mental health conditions, including anxiety, social phobia and various conduct disorders. One indicator of the scope of this problem is that children and teens in foster care are twice as likely as combat veterans to be diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), according to One Family Illinois (OFI), the nonprofit we partnered with for the 2024 annual service project.

In 2024, more than 100 Travelers employees and business community members traveled to OFI to transform the recreational, clinical and learning spaces that are vital to the children the nonprofit serves. Through our funding and volunteer support, we renovated the community center and outdoor spaces, providing a refreshed and more welcoming environment.

Volunteers configured newly purchased computers for the center’s computer lab and assembled updated furniture to better serve the children who use the space. We partnered with renowned local artist Edo, who grew up with the support of the foster care system, to commission an original artwork for the community center. We also beautified the outdoor spaces by constructing raised garden beds, park benches, picnic tables and shade structures.

To complete the transformation, we collaborated with KABOOM! to build a brand-new playground and recreational area, ensuring that children in the neighborhood have a safe and engaging space to play and grow.

Supporting Small Businesses

We continue to collaborate with entrepreneurship support organizations (ESOs) to provide entrepreneurs and small-business owners with training, infrastructure support, technical assistance and capital to help their businesses thrive.

Here are some examples of our ESO partnerships in 2024:

We partnered with the Institute of Veterans and Military Families to present a cybersecurity workshop for newly formed small businesses at the Veteran Women Igniting the Spirit of Entrepreneurship (V-WISE) training conference in Atlanta.
We partnered with Village Capital to support its Resource program to provide capital-readiness support to 10 ESOs in the southeast region of the U.S. Since 2020, Resource ESOs have served more than 3,500 entrepreneurs who have raised $400 million in investment capital and created more than 800 jobs.
Veterans bring unique skills, discipline and leadership to the business world. As an employee, military veteran and former participant of the V-WISE program, I was proud to present at the V-WISE conference and play a small part in the journey to success for women veteran entrepreneurs.
